The following are handy tweaks when installing Ubuntu.

Split Screen Problem

Inspiron 4000, C600

in the xorg.conf

add the following to the screen section

DefaultDepth 16

       SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 16
Modes "1024x768"
EndSubSection

Note: I(iamtunrip) have never used the viewport 0 0 line

Brightness hotkeys issue

After using the keyboard function keys to adjust brightness, gnome behaves oddly and menus cannot be accessed.

This issues is well documented here - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid/+source/linux/+bug/285323 .

You can use the Crtl-Alt F1 and then Crtl-Alt F7 key to fix it quickly.

A long term workaround is as follows -

create a file under /etc/X11/Xsession.d/ called 40custom_load-xmodmap containing

xmodmap -e 'keycode 232 = XF86_Switch_VT_7'
xmodmap -e 'keycode 233 = XF86_Switch_VT_7'

then

chmod 644 40custom_load-xmodmap
