Free Geek is an environmentally-conscious, non-profit community technology centre. We have a new opening for an Education Coordinator.

This position is part of a worker collective in a consensus-based organisation. All full-time staff at Free Geek receive the same wage, regardless of position or seniority. Current salary is $24,000 per year, averaging about 36 hours per week, no more than 40. Full benefits will be provided after 3 month trial period. Training will be paid and provided on-the-job.

This is a new position, created as part of a worker collective in a consensus-based organisation.

The Education Coordinator will help design, implement and oversee educational programs at Free Geek.


  • Work with other collective members to improve educational aspects of volunteer programs
  • Coordinate Education workgroup, volunteer instructors and volunteer activity related to education
  • Facilitate workshops that hone teaching skills and cultivate teachers from volunteer pool, ultimately creating self-sustaining curricula and systems
  • Design, implement and coordinate relevant workshops; standardise training; schedule regular classes
  • Design, implement and coordinate volunteer-run technical support infrastructure
  • Document curriculum online; develop and actively maintain documentation; collect statistical data related to educational programs
  • Communicate regularly with other Free Geek coordinators and participate in collective management structure
  • Attend staff and relevant workgroup meetings; maintain regular email communication

  • Familiarity with free and open source software/philosophy
  • Teaching/mentoring experience
  • Experience designing curricula
  • Experience coordinating people
  • Understanding of accessibility issues, ability to customize training material
  • Attention to detail; ability to multitask

The ideal candidate will be able to work well under stress in a somewhat chaotic setting, and maintain a positive attitude. You won't be afraid to ask questions but will be able to upkeep your responsibilities almost entirely without supervision. You will be able to remain flexible as Free Geek grows and changes.
