E-Waste Recycling Student Internship
Free Geek http://freegeekvancouver.org is an environmentally-conscious, non-profit community technology centre. We have an opening for an Ewaste Recycling student intern. Our work environment is fun, dynamic and challenging.
- Term of employment - Tuesday July 21st to Saturday Aug 29th
- 40 hours per week
- $8.00 hourly
Eligibility
- Candidates are required to be all of the following
- Age 15 to 30
- Full time student for the past school year
- Intend to return to school full time in the fall
- Canadian citizen, or permanent resident, or convention refugee

Responsibilities:
E-Waste Recycling Support
- Research e-waste impacts and create information pamphlets for the public, focus on the public health and environmental impacts e-waste disposal has on developing countries
- Research raw metal prices and submit reports to the recycling coordinator
- Work in the recycling warehouse & improve the documentation of recycling practices for community transparency and volunteer support
- Research safety practices related to shipping and receiving industry standards, compare research to Free Geek practices
General Free Geek Support:
- Respond to inquiries about our Volunteer Program & Orientations (phone, email, in person)
- Create and utilize form responses to requests for Free Geek information
- Input data related to volunteer programs
- Lead regular tours of the computer recycling facility: introducing computer recycling principles & e-waste impacts

- The logistics and process of scrap metal recycling

The student will learn:
- Safety procedures and practices within heavy industry
Plan for Supervision and Mentoring
- The student in this position will be paired with two full-time permanent staff members to provide support and guidance. The student will be paired with our Recycling Coordinator & our Outreach Coordinator. The delegated permanent staff members will provide a 'buddy system' approach to training in the hopes of fostering leadership and creativity. Four days a week the student will be working directly alongside our Recycling Coordinator. One day a week the student will work under the guidance of our Outreach Coordinator.
- Mentoring Career Skills Plan
1) Communication
- Share information using a range of information and communications technologies (e.g., voice, e-mail, computers)
This will be done through researching safety practices and surveying the Recycling Coordinator for Free Geek recycling practices. This skill will also be obtained through creating E-Waste informational pamphlets with the assistance of the Outreach Coordinator.
2) Innovation
- Learn to be innovative and resourceful. Identify and suggest alternative ways to achieve goals and get the job done.
This will be achieved while working alongside the Recycling Coordinator and documenting recycling practices for teaching purposes.
3) Social Responsibility
- Discover the realities of waste and economic inequity, understand how personal actions contribute to systemic issues.
This will be done through understanding the general work of Free Geek and e-waste recycling. The student will be required to research, understand and explain e-waste issues to the public through informational tours with the assistance of our Outreach Coordinator.
Check points:
- The student will attend weekly meetings to check in with all other staff and give a verbal report of progress and activity. At this point additional suggestions and direction will be offered by permanent staff members other than the Recycling and Outreach Coordinators.
- Every 3 weeks the student will meet with the Recycling Coordinator and the Outreach Coordinator to evaluate the students progress and experience and develop an 'Action Plan' for the next 3 weeks.
