Card Sorting

Initial Sort

Sort into five piles.

  • Modems
  • Sound cards
  • Video cards (VGA cards)
  • Network interface cards (NICs)
  • Wireless cards
  • Everything else (put these aside in a bin for later advanced card sorting)

Sub Sorting

Modems

Split into ISA and PCI.

Scrap ISA.

For the remaining PCI look at the major chip on the card and split into manufacturer. The various manufacturers are:

Scrap:

  • Agere
  • Ambient
  • Asante
  • Broadcom
  • Cirrus Logic
  • Conexant
  • Creative
  • ESS
  • IC
  • Intel
  • Lucent
  • Motorola
  • PCTel
  • Phantom
  • Rockwell
  • Smart Link
  • USRobotics
  • Zoltrix

Keep:

  • 3Com

Sound Cards

3 piles

  • ISA --> scrap
  • PCI --> 4 or less round jacks --> scrap
  • PCI --> 5 or more round jacks --> keep

Video Cards

Split into 3 piles, ISA, PCI and AGP.

  • ISA --> Scrap
  • PCI --> cards that have a fan or a heatsink.
  • AGP

Scrap the cards that have nothing except an HD15 connector.

Network Cards (NICs)

Remove Wake on Lan cables.

Split into ISA and PCI.

Look at the metal plate on each of the PCI cards and look for a marker indicating 1000 mbps (gigabit ethernet). There will be a "1000" stamped on the plate.

For the PCI, seperate into manufacturers. Look on the largest chip on the card, or at painted marking on the circuit board.

Scrap:

  • DLink (DL)
  • MPX
  • SMC
  • Realtek (RTL)
  • Network Everywhere
  • Linksys
  • Davicom
  • ADMtek
  • MX
  • Kingston
  • 3Com

Subsort:

  • Intel (look for a lower case 'i' character. There will also be a 'Pulse' chip present)

Seperate Intel NICs into network bootable and non-network bootable.

Non network bootable cards will have an empty socket on the card. Scrap these... keep the rest.
